Welcome to In The News. We are a free political podcast that covers politics, culture and current events. We don't cover political news from the point of view of liberal or conservative, Republican or Democratic ideologies. Rather we are a source of political news and commentary from the Independent point of view. We aim to educate listeners on the issues of the day by giving background on the topics and explaining how the political debate of the nation stands to impact our daily lives.

The Founding Fathers established the Electoral College to create a buffer between the general public and the choice for President. The main strategy for a presidential campaign is not to get the most votes but the most Electoral College votes. That results in campaigns targeting states with the most Electoral College votes instead of a broad strategy that pursues the most votes. Is this what the Founders had in mind?

How does the Electoral College work and does it still serve democracy in the best way? We discuss in today’s episode.

Donald Trump has had about as bad a two weeks as a politician can possibly have. And yet he is still very much in this race. We discuss why that may be a worrisome sign for Democrats. We also discuss why some of Donald Trump’s positions may be resonating more than many believe and why his biggest mistake may have been not running as a Democrat.

According to the World Bank, water shortages are going to deliver a “severe hit” to the economies of regions all over the world by the middle of this century. It’s believed that these shortages are going to spur massive migration and even regional armed conflict. Water is the most abundant natural element on earth and yet is growing scarcer year after year. What do the Flint Water Crisis and these findings by the World Bank tell us about the value of safe drinking water and the need to preserve it? We answer in today’s episode.

Hillary Clinton’s long march to the nomination ended this week when she became her party’s official candidate for President. The scrutiny that she has had to endure from the media has been extraordinary in the 30 plus years that she has been in public life. Has it all been justified? Are there clues in the words and actions of those she has worked most closely with, in both parties, which give us a glimpse into what a Clinton presidency would really be like? We explore in today’s episode.

Donald Trump’s campaign has been upending politics as we know it for more than a year now. Critics have been deriding and disparaging him and his campaign throughout that time and show no signs of letting up. Is there a cost that we as a nation will have to pay for not giving the Trump campaign its due? We discuss in this week’s episode.

Last week in the US was the kind of week you hope you don’t live through too many of. Killings of two African-American men at the hands of police officers sparked protests all over the country and what appears to be reprisal killings of several Dallas Police Officers.

What are we really talking about when we talk about race in America and why does the debate over race seemingly shut down so quickly after it begins? We attempt to address some of the bigger questions surrounding the race debate in America in this episode.

The House Select Committee on Benghazi recently announced its findings and while they do not completely exonerate Hillary Clinton’s State Department for their actions during the Benghazi attacks they seemingly place more blame on the Department of Defense. The FBI also recently announced the results of their investigation into the use of Clinton’s private email server and whether it jeopardized confidential government secrets.

In this episode we discuss the controversies, the results of the respective inquiries and why there is probably much celebration at Clinton Campaign Headquarters this week.

If there is any topic that has encapsulated the frustration that Trump has tapped into, it’s immigration. Trump has allowed, it seems, opponents of massive immigration to voice their opinions without the fear of being called racists. It’s a sentiment that is shared by a large number of people not just in the States, but in Europe as well.

In this episode we discuss the recent history of immigration reform and how it may have hit a dead end not just with opposition in Congress, but with the Trump campaign and the recent Brexit vote. Are we looking at the emergence of a new worldview on immigration?

After being in denial for much of the primary season, the Republican Establishment has come to grips with the fact that Donald Trump is the Republican nominee. But they’re now in a position where they either have to distance themselves from Trump and some of his more controversial positions and risk alienating the base or embrace them and risk alienating swing voters. How should Republicans navigate this seemingly no-win situation?

The Justice Department is continuing the investigation into the Orlando Shooting but Democrats have focused their attention on the gun debate. Are they handling the situation in the best way or are they letting an opportunity for advancement of gun control measures they want pass by? We discuss in today’s episode.
